Markers

Image
I just finished making my own markers for Black Powder (I also may use them for Piquet as I'm looking at playing by those rules, too). They are on Avery 5408 or Office Depot 660-534 labels (3/4" round). I put these on round, plastic 1" counters that you can get at any teacher supply store or online. I used red for casualty, blue for shaken, yellow for disorder, and green for all others. Here they are: Disorder: Link to Google Doc Casualty:  Link to Google Doc Shaken: Link to Google Doc First Fire: Link to Google Doc Victory Objective: Link to Google Doc Feel free to print and use for your own games.

Black Powder Rules Battle Report #1 The Battle of Many Mistakes

Image
Hello, I have played two battles so far between my Dutch and Bavarian Armies. Both I played solitaire for now as I want to learn the rules, record questions that might come up, and share how it went. I'm enjoying it but I think I'll love it when I get to have a player to play with. This is actually my 2nd solitaire battle that this report is based on. I called it The Battle of Many Mistakes because as you will see. I made a lot of serious errors. However, war is like that. I'm sure Napoleon would not have interrupted me if he were my opponent. A note for you. You will see underlined 1's and 6's in the shooting sections. These represent unmodified rolls of 1's and 6's that are always a miss or always a hit. The Battle of Many Mistakes Victory Points and Objectives The bridge: 1 VP The house 1 VP each hill 1 VP each unit that breaks 1 VP for opponent Terrain The dirt road also consists of a bridge crossing ther river.  There are 3 hills. I may have to switch ...

New Artillery and Commanders

Image
One of the command figures I bought was Marlborough writing the Blenheim dispatches which comes from a painting by Robert Alexander Hillingsford.  Here is my model from Warlord Games: Here are my Dutch brigadier generals. Here is the Dutch Artillery. These models are 8 lb. guns. The figures are all from Warlord Games. The uniform information comes from a book by C. A. Sapherson The Dutch Army of William III .

The Oranje-Friesland Cavalry Regiment

Image
This unit completes my Dutch cavalry regiment that I was making for Elixheim. I now have 3 Dutch cavalry regiments to match the Bavarians.  This is the Oranje-Friesland Regiment. It was also known as the Friesland Garde. Raised in 1668 and maintained by the Dutch province of Friesland. Colonels: 20 December1673 Prinz Hendrik Casimir van Nassau-Friesland 28 March 1696 Prinz Johan Willem Friso van Oranje-Nassau

Great Buildings from Paperterrain

Image
I'm almost ready to fight with my armies. However, I need a battlefield to play on. For this I got a 6" x 4" green felt cloth and some other felt fabrics and colors to make roads, rivers, and farm fields. It is pretty basic but it gets me started. I next went to look for buildings to for play. There are many choices out there but manufactured buildings can be as pricy as building an army. That's when I discovered Paperterrain. This company makes buildings on card stock that can be cut out, assembled, and used on the battlefield. You can find then at www.paperterrian.com .  My product came in the mail this past week. I am highly pleased. I went with a European hamlet and farmhouse. The buildings look very well on the table and I'm impressed with the detail in the artwork.  Assembly is very easy. I used a scissors and an Exacto knife to cut them out. Simple Elmer's glue connects the parts but I recommend spreading it out to avoid pumps in the paper. Fences can b...

On Being a Christian and a Historical Wargamer

Image
Many years ago as a preteen I had a wargame set up on a table when my older brother, Chris, and his friend, Tim, came by. Tim looked at my game and was interested. He said to Chris "Hey, this looks cool. Lets play!" I was quite happy to hear him say this and was hoping I could get a game going. However, Chris just said to him. "No, I don't take pleasure in human suffering." I had a lot of guilt feelings over this comment. I don't take pleasure in human suffering either. That's not why I play. Furthermore, I'm a Christian. I'm not what you call a "cultural Christian" who is a person that follows certain Christian customs out of tradition. No, I believe in Jesus Christ as the son of God who came to earth to sacrifice His life to pay for my sins as many others do, too. I also believe that He is going to return someday (likely very soon by the looks of the world).  So, why the interest in wargaming? Why does it appeal so much to me? How can...

Unboxing Warlord Games "Cavalry of the Grand Alliance"

In this video I open up a box of Spanish Succession 28 mm cavalry models for Warlord Game's Cavalry of the Grand Alliance. Each box makes 12 troopers with horses and includes an ensign, trumpeter and officer.  I made one mistake in talking about the carbines that come in the package. I said they were for grenadiers. I meant to say they are for dragoons.
